Program Overview

D'Youville College offers a doctoral (EdD) program in Health Policy and Health Education. Graduates of the program are prepared to meet the increasing demand among colleges, health care and government institutions for doctorally prepared personnel who can provide leadership in policy formulation, problem-solving and teaching. The program is designed specifically for working adult practitioners. Most courses are offered during evenings, with a number of courses being offered in the summer as well. The curricular design offers concentrations in Health Policy, for those preparing for management and leadership positions in the health care system, and in Health Education, for those preparing for college teaching or institutional education in health fields. All students are provided extensive preparation in research and analysis, organizational behavior, communications, law and policy, and finance. The curriculum involves 45 hours (13 courses) of advance graduate work beyond the professional master's degree in a health-related field. Twelve credit hours are comprised of core courses that focus on health system organization, communication and contemporary health care systems; twelve focus in the chosen concentration of health policy or health education; six are devoted to field study; six to dissertation preparation; and nine to the dissertation itself (including its presentation and oral defense). Upon completion of the core courses and individual concentration, students complete a three-part comprehensive examination. Students must also write a brief position paper dealing with a substantive issue in health care policy and orally defend the chosen position before a student/faculty symposium. | |||||||||||||||||||

Applications to the EdD program are considered on a competitive basis. Admission is based on an overall evaluation of credentials, including the applicant's graduate record. Applicants must have successfully completed a master's degree with grades of B or better, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 (based on a 4.0 scale). Prerequisites include course work at the master's level addressing issues of policy, introductory courses in health care systems and/or clinical practice, appropriate work in the areas of research methods, and a course in applied statistics or demonstration of minimum competency in applied statistics per written exam. Students not achieving competency will be required to take GRA 602 (Statistics Seminar) at D'Youville prior to or concurrent with the research course requirement. Applicants must submit a completed doctoral application form along with a non-refundable US$100 application fee, official undergraduate and graduate transcript(s), two letters of reference from graduate professors and employers/supervisors focusing on the applicant's potential for success in the program, a brief biographical sketch (500–1,000 words) and written statement of goals for pursuing doctoral study, and evidence of active involvement in the health care field (preferably over a period of at least two years) including demonstration of leadership and professionalism in health policy or education. Applicants should also submit one writing sample from within their graduate program coursework, not to exceed 30 pages in length. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 500. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is recommended, but not required. | |||||||||||||||||||

Expenses and Financial Support

EdD students pay US$775 per credit hour. To help with the current exchange rate, D'Youville is giving Canadian students a 20 per cent tuition waiver. Proof of Canadian citizenship must be provided to the Registrar's Office. The Financial Aid Office is available to help students finance their education at D'Youville. In order to receive most types of aid, a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be filed. Students are advised to make an appointment with a financial aid counselor to discuss aid options. | |||||||||||||||||||

Buildings and Facilities

Built in 1967, the Dr. Pauline M. Alt Building is a seven story, air conditioned facility containing classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls and faculty offices. It is the primary classroom building on campus. It also houses a curriculum resource center for the faculty of the division of nursing, established with funds from the James H. Cunningham Foundation. Upper floors have a great view of the city and the lake. Students also have access to newly built facilities, including the Montante Family Library, opened in 2000; the academic center, opened in 2001; gym, dedicated in 2003 and a new apartment style residence opened in January 2005. | |||||||||||||||||||

Student Support Services

The Career Services Center provides assistance to all current students, potential students and alumni. Staff help undergraduates, graduate level students, and alumni prepare for the job market before and after graduation. At the Learning Center, students can receive tutoring in any course or skills area at no extra cost. Counseling from the Learning Center's Academic Counselor is also provided. Students can receive any and all services related to disabilities, including advisement and accommodations. The International Student Office (ISO) provides assistance to international students in many ways. Students are counseled on immigration matters, assisted in the cultural adjustment process and connected to the services and activities available on the campus and in the community. Students are also educated about their rights and responsibilities while in F-1 student status. | |||||||||||||||||||
