D'Youville College (D'Youville) offers three graduate nursing programs that lead to master of science (MS) degrees: the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Community Health (with an emphasis in Nursing Education, Nursing Management or High Risk Parents and Children); Family Nurse Practitioner; and Nursing, with a choice of clinical focus. The Clinical Nurse Specialist in Community Health Nursing program is a 41 - 54 credit MS degree program that prepares nurses for advanced practice as clinical nurse specialists in community health nursing with an emphasis in either Advanced Clinical nursing education, high risk parents and children, or management. Clinical nurse specialists are prepared as practitioners of nursing science. Students study advanced practice principles of nursing science, community health and nursing theories and research. By virtue of their advanced education and expanded practice knowledge, clinical nurse specialists in community health nursing provide highly expert nursing care to communities with complex health needs. Classes are offered after 4:00 pm, evenings and/or all day Friday. Students can attend on either a full- or part-time basis. Overnight dormitory housing (space permitting) is available for Friday students at a nominal fee. Clinical placements and internships are convenient to areas of residence or employment. Depending on the student's future educational goals, two options are available for completion of the research component of the degree. The thesis option requires the completion of a research thesis. Students who are planning to continue their education with preparation at the doctoral level are advised to complete the thesis option. The project option requires the completion of a research component. The research track is recommended for students planning to enter into practice after receiving the Master's degree. The Family Nurse Practitioner program is a 39 - 42 credit hour MS degree that prepares nurses to provide primary care for patients of all ages. Students will learn to assess, diagnose and prescribe treatments for individuals and families in need of care. Preceptorships include 200 hours in women's health, 200 hours in pediatrics and 300 hours in adult settings. Classes are offered Thursday afternoons, evenings and during the day on Friday. The MS in Nursing is a 30 - 36 credit hour program offering students the opportunity, with guidance, to self-design the clinical component of their program. This unique opportunity allows students to investigate, experience and become an expert in a special focus area of nursing at the same time as they earn their master's degree. The student and faculty member determine an individualized plan of study with learning outcomes geared to meet the student's professional career goals. Students in the Nursing program also have the choice of following either a thesis track, recommended for students planning on continuing their studies at the doctoral level, or completing a project. Classes are offered after 4:00 pm, evenings and/or all day Friday. Students can attend on either a full- or part-time basis. Overnight housing (space permitting) is available for Friday students at a nominal fee. Students self-select clinical placements and/or internships to best meet their educational goals. | |||||||||||||||||||
